In spite of their independence, African nations continue to face serious economic, social, and military challenges. I claim colonialism served as a significant force that had a detrimental impact on African society, economics, and politics. The Oxford dictionary defines colonialism as the â€Å"policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.† In this essay, I will examine the impact of colonial policies and practices on â€Å"colonial† and â€Å"post-colonial† Africa. Specifically, I will demonstrate that colonialism should be blamed for its negative influence on Africa s economic, social and political status. Colonialism is an historic process which happened in different parts of Africa, such as Ghana, The Gambia, Egypt, Kenya, a nd Nigeria. This process exploited African valuables and its economic benefits. Due to colonialism’s obstruction to African progress and development, the continent continues to face serious economic challenges. The detrimental impact of colonial policies and practices on Africa was assisted by the depopulation and devastation to African societies caused by the transatlantic slave trade.
